I just bought a used 2016 tracker 17/54 duck and fishing boat upon reviewing the specs I found something that doesn’t make any sense to me! The 2015 model show max hp rating of 30hp where as the 2016 show the max hp rating as 50hp?

I went to look at thr data plate and it was worn off so I can’t see what the boat is suppose to be rated for? The boats are the exact same models and specs but the max hp ratings are different? I don’t understand this. This is the tiller handle version of the boat that I looked at for both specs.

Although the boat boat is listed as a 2016 model, I am not for sure that it wasn’t made in 2015? Again same boat but different hp max ratings? The boat has a Tohatsu TlDI 2 stroke 50 hp motor on it. It original had a mud motor on it and then the previous owner changed the motor out to the Tohatsu.

Just curious if any any ideas or help between the 2 different year models.

Thanks

Tiller models are rated lower HP. The original catalog for my last boat showed a significant difference for the 2 versions. When the boat finally came in they had put on the wrong plate, showing the side console HP for my tiller model. The catalog for the next year's models had both rated the same. Obvious typo.

The only way to know for sure is to call the manufacturer with the SN and let them tell you the right answer.

I just revised over my title and the year model is 2016. It is a tiller handle model. Grizzley MVX 17/54.... I just don’t see the 30hp as being the max hp for the boat as it is 17/54. I have seen the same boat with a steering wheel console rated for 70-75hp? I just don’t see how 30hp max could be right for this sized boat?

thanks for all the help and Input

It is what it is, figure the max hp yourself
Step One - Compute your Factor
A. Length of Boat x Transom Width (measure in feet: 14, 15.5,16, etc).

Step Two - Compare your factor to H.P. rating
A. 0-35 = 3 hp
B. 36-39 = 5 hp
C. 40-42 = 7.5 hp
D. 43-45 = 10 hp
E. 46-52 = 15 hp

Step Three - If your factor is over 52 (Choose only A or B)
A. With Remote Steering (steering wheel) and at least 20"transom height
Maximum HP = (Your factor x 2) - 90
. Example: 19' 6" long , 7 feet wide = (19.5 x 7 x 2) - 90 = 183 (Round up in multiples of 5.
This boat's max is 185 hp).

B. With Tiller Steering (hand or extension) or less than 20" transom height (Choose only 1 or 2)
1. Flat bottom, or hard chined boats (hull has hard angles)
Max HP = (Your factor x 0.5) - 15

2. Soft chine, rounded hulls
Max HP = (Your factor x 0.8) - 25

your max is based on forumla B, hard chine tiller
(your factor is above 52)

((Length X transom width) X 0.5) - 15

((17 X 4.5) X 0.5) - 15 equals
(76.5 X 0.5) - 15 equals
38.25 - 15 equals
23.5hp or 25hp

Hull is probably a little over 17ft long and/or a bit over 54in at the transom, allowing for that still:

30hp max

whether its got its USCG sticker/plate or not, its a 30hp max boat when set up as a tiller

This is the exact boat I have. Layout and year model. As u can see it says 50hp. But just a year before it was 30hp? Nothing changed but the years of the boats?

You are 100% correct with the math. It comes out to be a 30hp. It has a 50hp 2stroke tohatsu TLDI. I can’t change that. Next question what are the draw backs to being overpowered? I reviewed over 4stroke 30hp vs 50hp 2 stroke and the weight is only about 40-45lbs more.

The question of overpowering comes up at least twice a week. Google all the answers and you can decide for yourself if its risky or not.

If your HIN does in fact indicate its a 2016, and you have the factory literature to show 50 hp, then its a moot point. Order a new Coast Guard plate and put the factory numbers on it.

The simplest thing to do is call the manufacturer and ask them what is correct, why there was a difference, and where the typo occurred.

I guess i would ask why the original plate on a mere 3 year old boat is so worn. My '64 tinny has been sitting outside for many years and its plate is still quite legible.
