Fishbox macerator location

I found out today that my fish boxes don't drain. From the box drains the hose goes up before connecting to the macerator so there's always going to be about 4" of water left behind. If I fill the boxes so the water is above the macerator and has it primed, will it pump the water from the boxes or does the macerator not provide suction?

Mine draw a suction but they do not drain on there own have to be turned on. Which sucks if rains water gets in in the winter. It’s fine if it’s covered but I’m going to be trailering this in the winter through states that will be well below freezing at times.
