Get the OEM owners and service manual for the engine and read through them. If you take care of it, it will take care of you.

It can't be an 84, the XR2 was introduced for the 1985 model yr.

Actually, the site I quoted (marineengine dot com) states:

"Mercury/Mariner (150 HP Xr-2 Marathon Magnum (V-6) (1978-1985 Combined Book))"

I appreciate the help so far, does anyone have a PDF manual they could send me??? Hope im not asking too much, can't find a free one online and don't really want to spend $49.95, that's money better spent on beer and boats!!!!

So the other question I have is, there is an onboard oil tank, an auxiliary oil tank, and a fuel tank. How do they work, do I switch back and forth, is there a switch, does one take over when the other is empty, etc, etc

You have all the mentioned tanks and the whole system is automated.

No need to pre-mix the oil and fuel.

There is sensor that monitors the oil level in the auxiliary (big) tank with status lights on the dash (maybe in the tach) to keep you informed.

There is also a float sensor in the oil reservoir (onboard oil tank) which controls oil flow from the aux. tank.

All you have to do is, when prompted by the status lights, keep oil in the aux. tank.

Great, thanks.
so just to clarify, if my aux tank runs out, does the onboard tank take over?
