Mercruiser in/outboard no reversr

I have the Stamas 21' in/outboard. Yesterday I couldn't get out of forward. The shift cable outer tube was shot so put on a new cable the same one and same way. I can get in and out of forward but when going into reverse I hear it grinding and the engine dies. Could the cable not be adjusted correctly

Yes, sounds like your not adjusted correctly. What drive do you have?

How to properly adjust it sounds like it might not be going far enough to get into reverse

Whenever a shift cable is replaced, it will need a complete adjustment. The older ones are pretty self explanatory,... adjust cables at the engine side,..separate adjustments for forward and reverse.
