1970 Stamas shifter cable

The outer cable is separated but inner cable is fine should I replace the whole cable if so where to find it for 21' in/outboard starboard side

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... The inner, 'n outer cable are 1 piece to be replaced,....

Considerin' it's pushin' 50 years old, ya oughta replace the Helm, 'n Cable, as a Kit,....
I truly doubt you'll find a cable to match yer 1970 helm,....

Ok I replaced the cables. Sorry I'm working on a mercruiser. Not I can get it out of forward but when I go to reverse sound like grinding then the engine dies. I bought it without testing it on the water. Guy I bought it from was in bad shape. The big C. So I'm new to boating. Thanks for the help so far

I would post this in the Mercruiser forum on here. What is the condition of the short cable that goes from the outdrive to the mechanism that the new long shift cable is attached to. You can also remove the outdrive and physically move the shifter on the outdrive and see if its engaging that way.
