Hope I posted this in the right thread...

I have a 20hp chrysler outboard long shaft(1971) and was wondering, how big of a jon boat would I need to put that motor on safely? Would I need a V-hull aluminum boat because it's a longshaft?

The boat will have a plate in it with its HP rating, go by that.

You need a 20" transom, it may be connected to any style boat.

I would go by the max horse rating plate in the boat. I can tell you I had my 9.5 sport win on a 1542 Lowe Jon boat and it went about 20. I think a 16 ft will serve you well. The thing with Jon boats is that they get scary the faster they go. They like to walk around a lot and they seem like they might just flip over. The lake I am on has a few work boats that are the 16 ft big Jon types that move real nice with 20 HPs on them. I would look for the widest beam you can find. they are more stable the wider they get.
