Shimano TLD 20 Question

I just got a pair of shimano tld 20's and was wondering if anyone knows if I can remove the plate above the spool (the piece with the harness lugs). It gets in the way of my thumb when pitching baits and I'd like to take it off to open up the spool area.

It's easy enough to do, but I was wondering if I'd be compromising it's structural integrity in any way? Or is it's ONLY purpose to provide a place for harness clips?

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks

I have the 50's, removed harness hookup's so as not to interfere with pitching to clear boat..i run 50# after taking off the harness clips..plenty of fish on hook after removal..no problems.
