these 2 images are captured by my new Raymarine Dragonfly 7" fish finder/combo. The top screen is the new chirp sonar. The bottom screen is the new downvision sonar. 2 turtles were caught swimming on top of each other - mating in December? Oh well, anything is possible.

Carp fish captured in my new sonar so vividly. Especially the tail of the carp fish on the bottom screen by the downvision sonar. Tech is changing and getting better every year.

Need to calibrate your temp sensor....;) ..a bit off from the temps we've seen over the past 2 weeks in said location

Nice, wish they had something to give a good pic of the bottom. Looking for something the could distinguish between a pile of rocks and an anchor with chain. So far no one makes such a thing

What are you looking for?

Mine unit is a generation old and has no problem identifing an anchor. The updated version of my unit will tell you what brand it is....lol

That I would like to see images of that, sidescan sonar does great things but have found none that will do that.

The top picture is a normal return for fish. What makes you think its a turtle?

I was getting 62-64 degrees from about noon to 4pm on 12/12/2015. The air temp was between 67 to 70 degrees. What did you get?

Well, chirp sonar screen is showing more than an upside down v which could be a fish. Reason #1- if you look closely you can see the 2 fat legs. The traditional sonar would not give you this much detail on the fat legs. Look at my carp sonar image. You can see the fish chirp sonar image is clearly different from the turtles sonar image. Reason #2- the bottom image of 2 turtles from the down-vision sonar paints an even clearer picture of the turtles. Again, you can compare the turtle image and carp image at the bottom screen. Reason #3 - 12/12/2015 sat was a warm day air temp was about 68 to 70 degrees, a lot of tuttles sun bathing on the river banks. The carp not other fish image was because (1) the spot is known by local carp fishermen, so a lot of carps in there. (2) the triangular tail image implies no catfish. Maybe stripe bass but now is not the season for four mike run. So my guess. That said I didn't see the carp nor the 2 turtles.

I noticed a small turtle at the bottom left in the carp image. Let me know if you agree or disagree. Thanks for the great questions and comments.

The water temp at National Harbor was 45 degrees on Saturday. 48 degrees inside the the Wilson.

- OK got it. The reason why 4 mile run is a good 10 degrees higher than the main Potomac river is because of the sewer plant in 4 mile run river. You can smell the bad odor when the sewer plant is cooking up bad stuff. The water it emits into the river is warm. So, the winter bass tend to congregate and stay in the 4 mile run section instead of stay in the Potomac river.

Side Scan and Down scan certainly shorten the learning curve for a new user, but lack the definition of conventional sonar to an experienced user. A kin to taking a picture of someone's arm to look for broken bones. A novelist would immediately declare it a great picture of an arm. A doctor would find the "great picture" useless for the task at hand.

Saturday, we picked up and object buried a couple of feet deep in the mud in 84' of water. Furuno's bottom discrimination made the metal object stick out from the surrounding mud like a sore thumb . We surmised a sailboat mast or a crane jib off a commercial boat. You would not had seen the object using scan technology

Steel and mud, I could see that amount of discrimination, rock and steel not so much. Not saying your not right, just never seen it. Have a good one

You saw this item 2 feet below the mud, that's in the scratch my head area

Google "Furuno Bottom Discrimination".

Running a 1Kw thru-hull transducer. No problem penetrating that deep into sediments. We get streaks of clay that show up as very distinct cross sections in the bottom when you pass over them.

Depth of object off the display. Depths probably scudded by hard density change. Might have been half that depth for all I know. Something round, dark red/black, in one orientation, long and slender in the other, surrounded by a field of blue / green pocks over orange into red. Pretty indicative of sediment over sand.

Did you mean 1khz?
What kind of sonar is 1khz? I have 83khz wide beam and 200khz for narrow beam, 350 kHz for down vision from my ray-marine dragonfly 7
