90' suzuki DT55 lower unit issues after impeller

Hey looking for help on my DT55. When dropping the lower unit (in neutral) I think the shift rod caught on something on the way out. Now I think its stuck in reverse. Tried for an hour to get it to mesh back to neutral. What's the trick to get the lowet back to neutral?

Is the lower unit off the engine, or conected to the engine? If its conected, be careful not to do what I did and break the plastic shift arm assembly.
