Suzuki DT 115/140 tachometer?

So I was running down the ICW and crossed a large boat wake at maybe 3k rpm and the engine died because the kill switch was pulled by me either sitting on the chord or it was in my pocket. The tach quit working after that? It now reads between 0-1000rpm when the range should be 0-6000. I have checked the wires and was wondering where the tach signal comes from? I have a Clymers manual but can't seem to find it. I plan on changing all my guages so I put the new tach in and get the same thing. The battery is charging and everything else seems to be working as well. The setting on the back of the tach is set at 6 just like the old one. Appreciate any help. Thanks, Scott.

Thanks for the response. I'm wondering what the wire leads to on the motor. Voltage regulator, rectifier, stator? Thanks, Scott
