Re-powering from 2004 Evinrude 225 to 1989 Yamaha 115 - Redneck wiring??

I am in the process of re-powering a pontoon. Previous owner blew up the '04 Evinrude 225. We have a '89 Yamaha 115 sitting around. Is is possible to hack into the wiring harness and use it to connect the Yamaha? I am not a novice when it comes to wiring, but particularly concerned with eliminating the "System Check" features. I was thinking of starting with this adapter and removing the round Evinrude end to splice directly to my old controller harness. Can this be made to work? I'm trying to change out as few controls and gauges as possible.
