I have a 40hp Yamaha outboard with a 703 remote control. The alarm in the remote control will go off every so often when the engine is idling. While it is going off the engine will not run properly. It only seems to go off for a short period of time then the engine will run properly. Is this an engine temperature alarm? There is a constant stream of water being discharged and the oil reservoir is full. Is anyone familiar with this problem?

Thanks,

Gary

Re: Yamaha 703 Remote Controll

Alarms are most often overheating problems on 2 stroke Yamaha's. Go ahead and pull the lower unit to replace the water pump impeller. Alarms also can come from lack of oil in oil injection storage tanks.

While you're at it, have the lower unit drained looking for water in the grease and have it pressure tested to make sure the seals are good. The penalty for not watching the lower unit condition is very expensive repair--or a new lower unit.

water pump and thermostat are normal maintenance items, replace them and see if that fixes the problem.
If not test the temp sensors to see they operate in spec. and check motor temp with temp gun
If still have problem you may have to pull apart and clean cooling passages
