Hello..I have scoured the forum looking for help with a friends outboard. We changed the impeller and checked the tstat because of an overheating issue, however when it came time to put the lower unit back on, the gearing was all screwed up. Could not shift gears smoothly...very hard to shift. Did nothing else to the lower unit. We managed to re-connect the clutch rod to the horizontal assembly with great difficulty but now we cannot shift the gears. Can anyone help us out? Thanks

Was it in neutral? I found that if you took nut completely off, and moved the linkage and fuel lines out of the eay you could see what you were doing. Also I painted top off shift rod orange so it was more visible. Take a coat hanger, bend a small 90town on the end and use it to more things as needed.
Use a pair of needle nose pliers to work rod, and the hanger to hold lever in place while you put lever and nut back on.
