  • Suzuki 2001 DF90 4-stroke: Cylinder Head Issue

I purchased a 2001 Suzuki DF90 4 stroke recently that was running well and even had a successful compression test and service prior to transaction. I ran it for all of 20 hours (has around 400 total) until it crapped out in the middle of a creek a few weekends ago. Was running fine all morning and started to sputter like it was loosing prime and then it quit completely. Had to get towed, etc.

Took it to the local Suzuki mechanic and now I have been told there is a hole in the cylinder head and it needs to be replaced...quoted cost of around $3k (!!!). Is this common for a 10 year old engine that has been extremely well kept? I bought it from a co-worker who took extreme care with the motor, which I have as well. Spends mixed time in salt/fresh water, but always thoroughly cleaned. I looked up price online and could purchase cylinder head for about $1,700. Is this uncommon? Any advice?
