If I rotate the prop shaft of lower unit by hand (in the reverse setting) the shaft rotates slightly due to backlash only in either direction. In neutral, it rotates freely in both directions In forward, the propo shaft is locked when I turn it backwards but when I turn it forward it is somewhat free to turn (like its over clutchinbg the clutch dog. Is this normal? Appreciate any help.
Thanks.

Don't rotate the drive shaft in reverse, anticlock'. This will screw up the water pump. If you want to get the prop shaft to rotate in gear by manually rotating the drive shaft you may need a special socket fitted on the splines of the drive shaft. Only rotate clockwise!
