will tachometer work?

I need to add a tachometer to a 83' suzuki 50. Will a 12 pole alternator tachometer work with this engine? Out of curiosity- what engines have wierd settings like 6 pole or 12 pole?

1980 suzuki dt50 2 cylinder, and it uses a standard tach from the motor supplied tach lead using the two pulses per revolution setting.
