Re: 9.9yamaha 4stroke hard to start

I've owned a Yamaha 4 stroke for about 10 years now (purchased new in Spring '91). Anyway, it's a great engine! However, I did have some problems starting after maybe using the motor 4 seasons. Took about another season to get this figured out. Problem was in a jet in carburator became plugged. Mechanic felt this may have been due to a little too much fogging oil. He said that the jet(s) in the carb. are very small, and would'nt take much to plug. I could usually get the engine started by having someone else activate the key (electric start) while holding palm of hand over air intake to carburator. This would allow engine to "Suck" more gas. When I would take my hand off, sometimes engine would sputter and would need a little more of this hand choking technique. Good luck!
