I removed my lower unit to change the impeller, now I’m trying to put it back on. I’ve never done this before. I’ve greased the splines. I am having trouble getting the shaft into the upper unit. Not getting the splines to align, getting the shaft started in the receiver hole. Is this typical? Does it require a lot of force? Of course, all the videos show it sliding right in.

Make sure the lower unit and the shifter are both in neutral. Pay attention to the shifter shaft and water tube. The shifter shaft is a bit wobbley.

This isn’t a problem with things on the lower unit not lining up. I can’t get the shaft through the bushing at the bottom of the center unit and so can’t get the lower unit up to the point where I have to be concerned with alignment.

If it came out it will go back in, unless you damaged it. Grease ? Change the bushing out with a new one
