To verify if you have a 1996 or 1987 model just look at your trim n tilt if your trim n tilt motor bolts onto the outside of the starboard transom bracket you have a 1987 model if the trim n tilt motor is between the port & starboard transom brackets you have a 1996 model this is the easiest way to tell

NO NO NO!...look at the prefix number on his ID plate: 04003...your 1987 prefix number is 4001.

Clearly, it's a 1996 model year!
