thinking of buying a 2002 ox66 250 hp yamha getting out of the late 90s evinrude loopers . i found a motor with compression at 120 on all 6 cylinders tested my me with my gauge always on the money, the motor starts, runs good on the stand , unknown hours , no gauges . my question is , is the compression on this motor represent a low hour motor , strong etc or What should it b. my evinrude loopers were strong at 105 per cylinder . and what would be a fair price thanks JD

You can't tell the hours by the compression.
I had a pair of 88/85 hp on my boat.
The compression was 145-150 from the first day and to the last day.
Had to remove them as the salt finally ate the transom brackets.

If you have 5 with 120 and one with 90??
That would be something to look into??

My neighbor has a 2005 200 Yam.
Ran it low on oil 1 time :(
Has 120 on 5 and 100 on #6
Still runs great but has a "tick" when running.
Been like this for years.

Lower comp can also be a bad gauge.
Sold a 2002 Mercury 225
The buyer had a NEW gauge from Harbor Freight.
He started the comp tests and got 80# on the first 2 cyl.
I stopped him and said we'll use my tools.
Got my MAC tester and comp was 145 all 6.

Cheapo tools get cheapo results.

Sounds like the motor's a good candidate.

If you buy?? Yam's oil tanks can have sludge (caused by condensation) build up after time.
Remove the tank and see how much gunk's in the bottom.

Make sure to use good fuel, good oil and prop it to the upper RPM band and use the Yamaha ring free plus.
