Overheated, engine started few days later, won't start now

Overheated the engine pretty bad this weekend. Towed into the dock. Source seems to be the completely shredded impeller. I replaced the impeller and started the boat last night with muffs on. Started right up and ran it for a minute a 1000 rpm per instructions. Turned it off and noticed a black film soot in the discharge water. Went to start it this morning and it won't start, cranks, but won't turn over. Also, there is an occasionally clanking noise coming from the engine. Any ideas? Thanks,

Won't turn over? Sorry. My english is bad, don't quite understand how can it crank but not turn over. Hopefully it is not a case of broken head gasket that resulted in a hydrolock and cranking the engine damaging crankshaft, piston rods or something else. You should not try to start it until you have diagnosed the problem.

Remove the spark plugs and crank it to see if there is water in the cylinders.
