I am working on my boat 2005 chap with Volvo Penta GXi 5.0L engine.

I am replacing the circ pump, the impeller, idler pulley, and thermostat.

Is the impeller housing supposed to spin separate from the crank pulley? see this pic.

i seem to remember spinning it before to get better angle on the screws that hold the two halves together, and it make sense that it would stay still while the crank and spline spin, but its not spinning. Maybe the bearing seized. if so, how do i get the housing off the spline?

Thanks in advance!!!

Yes the impeller housing needs to spin on the shaft.
The thermostat is wedged into the housing by an "O" ring. Clean the housing and you will see the O ring. Pry out the O ring and the thermostat will come out.

Is that what the "O" Ring is for?!!
Mine is held in with a big PITA Snap Ring!

all done! the rust was a pain, but it got it all apart, cleaned up, and put back together. All that is left is installing the raw water pump on the boat, and doing a test run.
