I am a pretty good do-it-yourselfer and am contemplating changing this myself but I have ZERO experience here. Can somebody that has actually done it tell me how hard is it? What special tools are required? Would I be crazy to tackle it?

I have rebuilt a couple of engines (decades ago) but have always been intimidated by transmissions. I do all my own maintenance but this is scaring me a bit. Thanks for your help.

The drive is a 1991 Duoprop - old style...

I've went to the Volvo schools on the drives, and rebuilt probably 100 to 125 upper gear boxes. So I don't have any problems with them.
If your upper isn't corroded, and you keep perfect track of all the shims, keep the bearings clean and follow the OEM manual to the letter, you shouldn't have any problem. What drive model do you have?
