My buddy's engine is overheating. Need to know how to test water pump (i.e. will it be loose like in an auto) and to learn how to remove and replace and even where to buy a good rebuilt water pump. Do they have thermostats (scuse if a barney question).

It sounds like your refering to the engine circulatation pump. That is not typically the cause of overheating. I would start with the raw water impeller located in the housing mounted on the harmonic balancer. Take of the cover off and carefully pry the rubber impeller out of the housing. Those impellers should be changed every two years to prevent further issues.

Let us know what you find.

And yes, they do have thermostats.:)

Do you have a full model number or serial number for this engine? Not all the raw water pumps were on harmonic balancer, some were belt driven.
