Volvo Penta steering helmets????

I am replacing a 280 stern drive that has a two bolt steering helmet.The one I am replacing it with is a single hole,are the helments the same<br />except for the bushings and bolts? The dealer was unsure but still sold me a bushing and bolt for the single hole, the bolt fits but the bushing does not fit in the same hole of the two bolt steering helmet, are they made different?<br />If anyone knows please let me know.<br /> Thanks<br /> <BC>

No, they are not the same!<br />You are using an older style drive, as the single bolt (2 different styles) are the old style and no longer used.<br />To use the older drive, you will need to change the upper gear box clamp ring and get the upper gear box reshimmed for gear pattern and backlash. But it's not a DIY job and should be done by a dealer qualified in rebuilding Volvo drives.
