Volvo steering rod

I need help with a model 275 (1998). When looking at the sterring helmet I am able to lift the steering fork up and down a good 1/2". Is this normal? If not what needs replaced?

No, it is not normal. Normal play is .025 to .075. It is very dangerous to run it at all. It could cause a serious accident. What is the diameter of the shaft you have? There are 3 sizes.
