what engine?

generally your starter gets hot.

however cranking for longer than 10 seconds means something is wrong.

Battery gets tired . . .
Starter gets hot . . .
Engine says to itself . . . "you aren't going anywhere" :D
Crew starts thinking . . . "we're doomed"

My previous boat would tend to loose the fuel system 'prime' if left for a week or 2, so it would take a good 10-15 seconds for the (mechanical) fuel pump to bring fuel back up to the engine.

Why do you ask? Trouble starting the engine :noidea:

Hey sorry for the late reply its a 5.0fi Volvo penta, I ended up priming the engine Before starting if that’s even possible with the fuel injected engines but it seemed to work so no problems, was basically just concerned with hydro locking or wearing out any parts

Modern engines start right up if in good condition.-----That is why we have remote starters for vehicles.----Push button start in vehicles.----Cranking more than 10 seconds means something is wrong.-----It will damage the starter too.

Onlt times that I have seen excessive cranking hydro lock a motor was when that motor had a waterlift muffler.
