I have discovered that the heat exchanger lower end cap seal has failed. Unfortunately I have no idea as to how this has happened, I havent touched it so probably the shop has overtighten it or something...maybe years ago already.
anyway, this is how it looks, so clearly it needs to be replaced. But the question is - if I loosen the lower end cap, is it raw water or coolant that will flow out of the heat exchanger body?

HX end cap gaskets are about $6. they are generic enough to find. the HX shown should also have an o-ring around the bolt at the cover. get one of those as well

While you have the cap ends off, I would get the appropriately sized rod and clean out the heat exchanger passages. My heat exchanger does not have O-rings under the bolts, so yours may not either.
