Hi everyone, just need some input. I purchased this Seaswirl Striper 2600SC this fall without an engine. It had a 5.7 Volvo Penta GI with DP F5 stainless props. The guy was going to get it rebuilt but I left the block behind and took all the components. Now I’m looking for a block for it. The 2003 5.7 GI-BF was rated at 270 hp. I was thinking about going with the 5.7 GXI. I found a 5.7 GXI ecu and spare drive, F6 props. My question is will going from 270-320 hp be enough to run this boat. Where I fish it’s long hauls going out to fishing grounds. 2.5-3 hr trips

Guess I'm missing something

It had a 270 hp 5.7

Plan to install a 320 hp 5.7

The higher hp motor will do fine with the boat which once had a lower hp motor. A bigger motor does not burn more fuel unless its pushed harder using the upper end of the hp range

Could just install a 5.7 with a carb and not bother with injection, but I do like EFI

I wanted to go with a 383 stroker is was going to be an issue with programming the ecu where I'm located. They said to go with carb but I also want to stay with injection.

skip the injection, go with a stroker, or even a big block if you want.

thats a heavy boat

If the ECU you have is a MEFI 1 thru 4 it can be reprogramed by OBD or Whipple for a 383. They would just need info for the cam, injectors, fuel pressure maybe some other info

How much fuel can you carry?

Range is more important than speed when it comes to long range fishing.

Keep true to the 1/3-1/3-1/3 rule

That is a big heavy boat, for a small block. I'd go with the stroker if you can. The power output is significantly more than a 5.7 and you have some good options, you can go the EFI route, as long as the ECU can be re-programmed to provide a proper fuel air mix for the larger displacement engine. Personally I'd go with a carbed application because you have more back yard mechanic friendly options with carbs. That depends on who you have available to help you with the set up. Also sometimes manufacturers have the lousy habit of making certain things NLA, (like ECUs) then you are SOL, unless you can get another if yours fails. With a simple carb, and GM Delco Voyager EST ignition system, you will never be left high and dry due to some stupid proprietary part being NLA.

The 6.2 L stroker (377 cu in) can be bought either new or re-manufactured and can be set up with a carb (Edelbrock or Holley) with a GM cast iron 4bbl intake. Rated at approx. 340 hp and 425 ft lbs of torque. That really out-powers whatever that boat came with a standard.

you can buy a new 377 for $4200 and has 350hp at the crank

you can build a new 377 for a bit less and build it with 450hp at the crank

Fuel tank is 507 litres

133 gallon.

so with a light throttle commanding 100hp, you have 9 hours of boating until you run out.
at WOT, about 2.5 hours. at just above idle, about 18-20 hours

I wouldnt venture to far out with only 133 gallons

thats not all that much fuel for a 26’ boat. I carry 600 liters in a 22’ boat

What is your range with the proposed engine?

I have no idea on the range of this boat. I bought it without the motor. My old boat was 21’ and I usually got 210 gps miles loaded with 5.7 / bravo 3. Boat weighted 4300 dry. 3 people and gear I was around 5200 lbs. this boat weights 5250 dry

I have a 26 foot boat with a 80 gallon tank (300 liters) weighing 3500#. best I could do without going nuts with the throttle on a slow cruise was 120 miles with the small block

i am pretty sure I can match that with the big block if I keep the throttle back. or at WOT, I estimate I can go about 60 miles.....very very quickly
