Good afternoon all, finally got the '98 Glastron running and hopefully past the fuel / vacuum issue. Engine is a 4.3gl Volvo Penta IO. Engine ID 4110168702.
Anyhow other day on the lake (out in the middle 2 miles from launch- of course!) went to start it after anchoring and swimming and it seemed seized. Tried again and stater just spun.

Got towed back to shore and took starter off at home (PITA by the way). Housing was split/cracked and a piece was lodged between flywheel an starter gear.
Ordered a new marine starter and it came with only 3 terminals. Can this be used? The purple wire relay terminal (R terminal) is not present.
So question is - Just send back and get correct??

I would look at it this way, your original starter came with 4 terminals and all 4 are being used. The new one has 3, you need one with 4

Check for water in the cyls you may have a hydro lock due to bad exhaust or other cause. Starters don’t do that for no reason.

Also when you install the new starter make sure that the bolts are the right length, if they are too long they will bottom out in the block and not hold the starter tight, that can allow it to move and break the bolts off in the block which will cause you a lot of grief...You will need the 4 terminal starter the 3 will not work for your engine. When you install it, disable the ignition and remove the spark plugs....crank it and see if water comes out of the cyls...if so....you got some work to do.....

Ok, finally installed new (4 post) starter. Works great. BUT, not sure why - now I have a no start situation.
Cranks good, fuel to carb good, spark good. It fires up but only for a split second and dies out.

No water came out of cylinders after removing plugs and disabling ignition.
Just wont stay running now. Lots of white smoke though after the brief firing.

Thanks again in advance!

Lots of white smoke though after the brief firing.

Pull the plugs, pull the kill switch and crank the motor over some. As Lou mentioned, need to check for water
