Volvo Penta 5.0GXi starter cranks but does not engage the fly wheel.

I have Volvo Penta 5.0GXi that won’t start. We were out all day over the weekend and my bilge had stopped working and the boat took on a bit of water. I was trying to limp it back to the shore, When it died. I tried to restart it after I pumped all the water out and the starter turns but does not engage the fly wheel. Does anyone have an idea what this might be. Is it possibly because the starter got wet or did I mess something up in the motor?

Yep, starter got wet and now the bendix is hanging. It could probably be taken apart, cleaned and lubed, but could just get another, or take to a shop to rebuild
