Engine has 850 hours. I changed gimbal bearing and unjoints this spring and it's been running and sounding great. Last couple times on he water intermittently when I shift into reverse it does not engage immediately, but only when the throttle is increase and then in goes into gear with a clunk. I've removed the plastic cover and it appears to be moving the mechanism properly and when run on the muffs in the driveway it shifts immediately into reverse just fine with no clunk. Any ideas as to what I can check? No issues going into forward. Heading to the lake on Saturday for a week. If I don't have this issue resolved, would be ok to continue to use the boat but just not use reverse?

check the shift linkage at the drive

check the oil level

if the level is low, you may have damaged the cone clutch.

Since I can see the linkage move what appears to be appropriately and the prop begins to spin when put into reverse when engine is running on the muffs, what more can I ‘check’ on the linkage?

the service manual goes thru a complete process of adjustment. that is what I would check.
