I am looking to replace the 6 nuts that hold the out drive on. The dealer I use is an hour away and told me that a stainless lock nut from Home Depot will work. I took an old one off and it appears to be aluminum? Does it matter? I have read 25 and then 50 # of torque but I can’t seem to find the tightening sequence. Thanks!

Yes OEM nuts are recommended to help prevent other issues such as nut galling and corrosion....Volvo part number 3853329 ..., http://ww2.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Acc...=3853329&s=sol

Some past discussions for you too if interested regarding these nuts,
https://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...-outdrive-nuts
https://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...ttachment-nuts

Tighten the nuts in two steps. Use 3/8 in. drive, 5/8 in. swivel socket to tighten nuts to an initial setting of 25 ft. lb.. Start with center nut and work in a crisscross pattern to secure the stern drive to the pivot housing. Use the same crisscross pattern to tighten all six locknuts to a final setting of 50 ft.lb.

Ayuh,..... If Volvo is like Merc, the stock nuts are chrome plated brass,......

As FT says, Stainless is Not the way to go, as they gall, badly,....

On the Cobra which is very similar, I have never replaced those nuts, all I did was coat the threads on the 6 studs every time I installed it with OMC gasket sealer, or Permatex Aviation, and never had a problem with one backing off or not coming off when I pulled the drive. I know they say to change them, but I have not found that to be necessary, just coating the threads and getting them good and tight.

20 years removing drive every year as boat is used 7 months a year in salt water and I am still using the same nuts. Brass chrome plated. Your choice.

Original nuts from new. I know Volvo says replace each time BUT it is my choice on my boat. If it was someone else's boat I was working on then they would be renewed. Which is why I said "your choice".
