Don't start a new thread. Even the fuel pump can contribute to hard starting.

A mechanical pump - Right? A finger over the line isn't a good test. Mechanical pumps don't put out much pressure.

Was gas in the when you took it off the carb? Even a dribble?

yes there was a dribble of gas when i took off my finger off the line, there was a bit of pressure as a tiny amount of gas sprayed. I assume its an electrical pump but i have attached a picture here:

You have the electric pump, they can go bad or the relay/wiring can also cause problems. I'd do a pressure test on it before doing anything else though. The newer 4.3 lost the provision for the mechanical pump which is a shame because they are inexpensive, seem to be less trouble than electric pumps and last nearly forever (mine lasted 30 years).
