Hi everyone! I am redoing my transom currently and have my drive and shield off for the job. I have known for a while that the shield had a small hole drilled (maybe 1/4”-3/8”)for one of the exhaust relief. Not done by me! Is there any reason I can’t do a proper job and drill the hole properly to match the other side? This would essentially make a v8 shield? Am I missing something else? The hole is obviously supposed to be much larger and the inside edge has a small lip. I can post pics later.

ive owned the boat 7 yrs and ran it this whole time time as is with no issues. Aside from the one little rubber hose breaking off the one side that had the proper factory exhaust relief. Can those hoses be had still? I’ll need two if I’m able to replicate the proper hole.

thanks for any advice!

I will get pics of the shield and y pipe later today to illustrate what I’m talking about. I’d like to fix it while it’s all apart and removed from the boat.

Well, looks there are more differences between the 4cyl and V8 shield. The holes aren’t in the same location vertically compared to the ypipe.

Heres pics. I’m thinking it still may be possible to have it machined for the proper hole locations and fill weld the misaligned hole. Any thoughts?

this is the misalignment with he y pipe

you will need to counter-bore the hole, however what are you trying to gain? the idle relief ports are simply there to prevent water from backing up the exhaust. most goes out the drive

Thanks for the reply Scott! So I’d be ok to just run as is? (I have for the many years.) How would I got about sealing y pipe to shield properly? They just Gobbed sealant in this area.

My line of thinking was that I’ve got it apart, fix it right.

You seal it with the correct rubber tube

The changed the design.late (maybe in 1986), where the idle relief ports are solely in the Y-pipe outlet

Can you clarify Scott? Should I just buy the one “proper” side exaust hose and oring the other side?
