Question - How to remove the center fastener on the steering helmet which is attached to a Aquamatic 280 outdrive? I removed two bolts which were running through the sleeve. There are no other threaded bolt holes on this sleeve and I have two bent rods which are shown in the manual. My question is - Do I put these two rods through the bushing and pull or do I try to turn the bushing out?

Try to turn the bushing by rocking it back and forth with the 2 rods. The type you have were a PITA to remove. You can still get the later style or after getting it out drill and tap it to 1/4” 20.

I have taken a piece of flat bar, drilled two holes and used grade 8 nuts to make a spanner to turn the pin.

once you get it out, get a late model pin.

Do you think that a little heat applied around the plug would help?

not really, it would make the pin stick more as you would have to hit the pin.

hitting the pin with a can of freeze-it would be better. however i would make a spanner first, easy, takes 5 minutes to make, and it will turn the pin. just work it back and forth and it will be out in a few minutes.

Did you mean use 2 grade 8 bolts instead of nuts to be used through the flat bar stock?
