Need help setting the correct timing after a head gasket install.

I have a 5.0 Gi pwtr ser# 4110187166(?) that I have just replace the head gasket. I have set the timing by sound (an marks made before taking distributor off) and it is running fine. I have tried to time it by the sticky for Delco EST but every time I unplug the 4 pin connector to plug in the initial timing connector the engine goes dead. Right now it is set TDC at idle but idle is (high) aroung 850 rpm.

Being a Gi the motor should be fuel injected. If this is the case you place a paper clip in pins C and D (or the white/Black wire to the Black wire). The jumper puts the motor in base timing mode, then adjust timing
