Is there an impeller inside an SX lower unit?

Buddy of mine swears there should be some impeller in the lower unit...he has a mercruiser, I have a VP...I am fixing to replace the impeller in the raw water pump (is that also called seawater pump???) and wanted to be sure mine didn't have one in the lower unit...New member, new boat owner, many new questions, I appreciate the willingness to help.

your buddy is nuts, you should bet him a beer or three. only the Mercruiser Alpha has the pump in the foot. the Volvo has a motor mounted pump as well as the Mercruiser Bravo

Well perhaps he is thinking of an outboard? Do they use impellers in the "foot"? Anyway, thanks, he's a good boater but pays someone to do all his mechanical work unlike me so his knowledge is vague.

He has a '99 Mariah Shabah in the 20-21ft range I think....could it be he has the Alpha?

the Merc Alpha drive is similar to outboard drives and those have the impeller in the foot. the old OMC stringers had the impeller between the upper and lower

however volvo never has.
