Sometimes called engine protection mode, save mode, guardian mode, limp mode, slow mode or other things like that. In my daughter's 98 Volvo Penta 5.0GI which uses the Mefi 1 ECM it can be caused by two things. Over heat or low oil pressure. The concept bewilders me as to why you would run an engine which is overheating or has no oil pressure. Even at low rpms. Additionally it doesn't turn on any lights! You are left guessing. It is throttle body injection and watching the injectors, one is cut off at 2500 rpm. Oil pressure shows normal as does the temperature. The oil pressure switch is located in the block above the oil filter. I pulled the wire off and it now runs great. I'm leaving the wire off. Who needs it. I maintain by sons VP stern drive and my daughters. They are always a mystery to me. Thanks for all the info on this forum.
