Hello,

Just got myself West bend 7.5 hp outboard motor serial number 571 597 .
I started it briefly, but later found that Gear box oil had leaked out and gears are covered in greasy gank.
What is the best way to clean it out; and also where is the impeller in located on this motor?

Could somebody help me please.

Thank you

It would help if we had an idea what year/model the motor is. Can you post some pictures of the gearcase? Use some mineral spirits to clean the parts.

"The water pump is mounted in the lower unit driveshaft housing (upper gearcase)"...in other words, the usual location.

Thats because greasy gunk is grease not oil. Lubriplate grease you can get at Napa or online

Looks like 571.597 is the model number for a 1956 Elgin 7.5hp
