It seems that there isn't a lot of photo support regarding these Yamaha sterndrive units so I am posting pics of this stuff as I go. Any help along the way would be greatly appreciated.

I removed the outdrive and this is what I found:

How do I check the cable from this perspective? Should the slide on the top right move smoothly?

I'm assuming the shift fork is in the middle. Should it turn left and right smoothly with little effort? I'm assuming this remedy involves separating the upper and lower outdrive. Any special precautions in doing so? Is it pretty straight forward? Drain fluid, remove bolts, pull apart....

I'm assuming this brass piece with the bolt going through it should not be cracked along the outside of the bolt head.

If you search back, I've gone thru drilling out the shift fork bushings several times. And you are correct, shift arm is not suppose to be cracked, but not the first time I've seen it.

Yup, I found, and followed capt kens drilling out the shift fork bushing procedure. I did it about 5-6 years ago, never had an issue since.
