Hello everyone. I am new to I/o engines and trying to identify my drive unit. I have a 1977 Slickcraft sx176. My drive unit is broken at the prop and need to find a new one. How do I identify what type?

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,..... A picture of the Whole drive would help,......

It appears to be a Mercruiser, or atleast it's black,.....

Click the link in my signature titled Don'S Adults Only Section,.....
In there you'll find a link that Id's all, or most all of the Merc drives from each other,.....

That is a OMC electric shift between 73-77. There is a snap ring groove machined in the case and that looks like where it parted. Not good.

If you find the word cobra anywhere on your drive.....it was put there by someone other than OMC

The cobra drives came out in 1986 and that was not the projects original name.

Thank you for the help. Now to find one that doesn't break the bank. Unless I can convert one to work cheaper.

You can most likely find a newer boat in good condition cheaper than replacing the drive. Those old stringer ball drives are tough to find parts for How is the rubber boot most likely dry rotted if not reciently replaced. They are out there good luck finding a good one.
