I have a 1973 Starcraft American with a Waukesha 302. While on the lake today we heard / felt a little thump followed by some jangling noise. After poking around I found this... collar (?) that seemed to have broken loose from the back of the main pulley. I can't see or tell how it was ever attached or what it's purpose is. I'll get some pictures posted tomorrow. But does this ring a bell with anyone with 302 experience?

depending on the amount of room you have, you may need to pull the motor to replace the balancer

Thanks. Newbie mechanic question, is the harmonic balancer connected to the pulley or drive shaft? I "think" I have enough room. (engine is a 302).

the pulley would be bolted to the harmonic balancer

the harmonic balancer is on the crank shaft

you need to use a balancer puller, available for loan at your local auto parts store. you need to have about 8" of room in front of the balancer for the puller

I called around a few parts stores, the replacement part has a 4 bolt pattern, the pulley assembly is a 3 bolt.

Great document, but I am still having a heck of a time finding a replacement.

Ford, the parts I removed (balancer and pulley) have Ford logo stamps. As for easy peasy, not so much. All the parts places tell me the replacement for a 1973 302 balancer is one that has 4 holes for the pully, mine only has 3.

There is a service that rebuilds harmonic balancers. There is an ad in the Hemmings Motor News at the larger book stores.
