How can I tell if my engine coupler has slipped. Spline are still in it and it squeaks when running even with lower unit off

and what drive?
and what motor?

if its a stringer drive, the coupler is a steel button. they wear out, they would not slip. there is also no alignment needed on a stringer drive

if its a cobra drive, the coupler is an elastomeric button type. the cobra drives need an annual check of the alignment just like a Mercruiser.
