Points work fine if you clean and gap them at the beginning of each season, and keep the cam lubricated. Or, you can install an electronic pickup conversion kit and forget about it.
Is this a sterndrive or a direct drive ski boat? Reason I ask is because if its a Cobra sterndrive you need the ESA to work, in order to shift to neutral. And if you convert to electronic from points, the ESA you have will not work. You will have to find out if CDI electronics makes an ESA module that will work with electronic ignition for that engine. There is also a way to 'wire it like a Merc Alpha' but this can stall the engine if you don't shift fast enough. The OMC system is more sophisticated in that it would lower the idle to about 450 rpm when shifting not short out the ignition momentarily like the Merc system.
