1975 OMC 235 Stringer. 19' Cobalt. 351 Windsor. Engine over heats on plane. Back off of plane and putt around and water temp drops. New impeller, thermostat and marine water pump. Pick up tube free of obstruction. Strange! Very frustrating!

Try greasing your swivel bearing (zerk on the front of the drive behind the red plastic nut). If that swivel is not greased, it can recirculate exhaust into your cooling.

Welcome aboard.

Another place to check. Did you replace the grommet where the stainless water tube is inserted into the rear of the swivel bearing? Corrosion will build up and pinch the grommet and restrict the incoming water supply. If not, you have to seperate the exhaust housing from the lower gear case to do this and have to be careful not to damage the shift wire. If you are in a salt water area this can be a challenge as the bolts are frozen so bad that without a torch just about every bolt will want to break.
