Jusr bought a 1953 Keikhaefer Mercury Mark 5,serial# 585689 from an older gent who had it in his attic for the last 50 years or so.What is the difference between the Mark 5 and the KF-5? Are there many of these engines out there that still run.Any value? Thanks in advance for any info you can give me on my engine.

Re: 1953 Keikhaefer Mercury Mark 5

The Mark 5 and KF5 (Super 5) were quite similar. The major difference being that the Mark 5 had a neutral clutch, and as such had a completely different lower unit configuration. The powerheads were nearly identical, with the major difference being that most KF-5s had a Bendix-Scintilla magneto, while most Mark 5s had a Phelon magneto. As a unit, the ignition systems are interchangeable and some have been swapped one way or the other over the years. The Mark 5 recoil incorporated the release for the neutral clutch, so it is a bit different from that on the KF-5.
Hope that helps...
