I am looking in my area for a new tiller for my small RIB and a back up for my main. I found 2 short shaft motors in my area of similar price. 1987 johnsin 9.9 and a 1999 mercury 6.0 2 stroke. Assuming both motors start/run/not rotten which would be the better buy? I am leaning toward the johnson based on what I have heard about them before the mid 90s, but the mercury has 12 less years on it. And most likely fewer hours.

Will depend entirely if needing more HP to count with and go for the Johnson. Year is relative, can have an oldie motor with low hour use and a newer motor with high hours use...

The rib is 9ft long and rated for 10hp max. I am checking both out today.

Go for the larger HP one, small Sib-Ribs has higher hull drag compared to larger ones, will push/plane much better..
