I've got a Mariner 30A, vintage 1982, needing a new thermostat. Looked up the Mercury version and it's about $92. Seems a bit high since it seems most other thermostats run in the $20-$30 range.

I don't know if Sierra makes a version of my thermostat. I do know that my motor is basically a 1979-1985 Yamaha 30 AF and that the Yamaha parts run cheaper than the Mercury parts. However, I can't find any sort of cross-reference info.

Anybody aware of a cross-reference source tor thermostats between Mercury, Sierra and Yamaha? Or, if Sierra makes a thermostat (140 degree) that fits the 1982 Mariner 30 A?

The picture tells me to see if the common Johnson / Evinrude / Mercury thermostat would work.-----Look at one for say a 1966 model 6 HP Evinrude.--Or a 1998 model Johnson 115 HP crossflow as it has 2 that look like that.----Dime a dozen in my workshop

Hmmm. You bring up an approach I hadn't thought of. So, maybe if I get any old 140 degree thermostat with the same physical dimensions as the Mercury OEM it would work?

Gee, it the 'stat is common, I would expect Sierra or GLM to make one, listed for your motor. Have you looked at the internet OB motor parts sites?

Been doing some research. Best I could find is what appears to be a Mallory (sp?) for about $77. I find it very hard to browse the Sierra inventory since their index listings don't go back far enough to cover my '82 Mariner. That' why I was hoping for some sort of cross-reference table.

In the meantime, I pulled out an old thermostat that is still in good condition (both physical appearance and function). The price (free) is right for that one - I'll keep pecking away for a new source.

Try E basic power. They have the common replacement parts for lots of motors. Also try crowley marine

I just went thru this with a voltage regulator. The Sierra part was 1/3 the price.

Look up the mercury part number and then search for it under Sierra. It shouldn't be too hard if you know how to Google.

Orrrrrrr, google the Merc part on Ebay and the alternatives should come right up.

Mercury OEM is 95675M --- $60.44
Gasket is a 27-81031 ---- $3.65

I looked at Sierra cross for you and didn't see a match up from their catalog.

As an aside, that part is PNLA -- production no longer available. Meaning, when they run out of stock of them, they are officially done producing. That usually means it's not shared between too many other models --- which is probably why there are few aftermarket alternatives for it.

Appreciate the info guys. Creates a slight dilemma for me - hope the old thermostat hangs on till I finally tire of screwing around with this motor - or, invest a few $$ in one of what appears to be a dwindling supply in the event I need one in the relatively near future.

Maybe it's time to re-power.

Did you try Flee-Bay or the equivalent that starts with an "A"

Also, Thermostats are very nice to have for efficiency. Motors will run without them.

Tried the "A" place. Can locate by the Mercury part #,, but, still kind of pricy ($70-$90 range). Lots of Sierra options but no way to determine applicability or even temperature range. I'll take a look at the "E" place.

There seems to be a few choices of thermostats part number wise...Do you have your full engine serial number handy by chance?

No boat repair shop in your area where you could take yours and compare with a MERCURY / JOHNSON / EVINRUDE thermostat ??

Yes, it is: 689407533; Model 30A,
30E,L,

Apparently a clone of Yamaha 30AF, 1979-1985, although I've never been able to find a cross reference guide.

I looked at Sierra cross for you and didn't see a match up from their catalog.
Figured you may like to just know that somewhere along the look-up line it seems you accidentally mixed the thermostat part numbers up with a number that's coming up as an Decal, Front, 37-95675M...(95675M vs 99080M)...https://www.crowleymarine.com/search/?q=95675m

The gasket is correct at 27-81031 though there is another one that ends with an M, 27-81031M.

In general an engine serial number is always helpful to find the correct parts as i noticed a couple of possibilities while looking without the serial number but going off of the engine description the thermostat looked to be part number 99080M at the $90.00 range; 'Plus now having the serial number helps confirm the correct part number. https://www.mercruiserparts.com/99080m-thermostat

Serial Number 689-407533 is also Model Number 7030520, https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/655.cfm?mdl=E81X7O

Looking up the gasket number shows aftermarket gaskets available,
18-0232 COVER GASKET
Replaces: 27-81031M
^ Sierra Marine Cover Gasket is equivalent to parts:
  • 655-12414-A1-00 Yamaha Marine
  • 81031 Mercury Marine
  • 27 81031 Mercury Marine

Which looking up an equivalent type Yamaha engine shows a similar thermostat at 140 degrees that uses the same gasket numbers too. Yamaha 6F5-12411-03-00 THERMOSTAT which turns into Sierra # 18-3625 THERMOSTAT (Seal Included)60°C 140 degrees at lower costs.

Compare the images but those numbers should be your cross references for you minuteman62-64.

Wow, that's way better detective work than I can do. Thanks. Got some options.
