So Ill start off with full disclosure, this is my first outboard and my first experience repairing an outboard. I recently picked up a Merc 9.8 110, serial number 7056510. I'm trying to get it fired up, have cleaned carb, changed impeller, checked plug gap. Realized the previous owner had replaced the plugs with the wrong number altogether, but I gapped them and got the engine to run. I have looked online and I find 2 different plugs for this engine, the surface gap, and the regular style electrode. What I'm asking here is if someone could help me figured out which style of plug I need. Thanks in advance

If that motor happens to be a rebadged 9.8 Tohatsu model, need to install NKG-BP7HS-10, BPR7HS-10 gapped tight to 1.0 mm or Champion L82Y with same 1.0 mm electrode gap.

That motor is a 1975 Canadian-made 2-stroke.

From the Merc manual:

"Merc 9.8 and Merc 7.5: NGK B9HS-10 or AC M40FFX or Champion L77J4 (use Champion QL77J4 where Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) Supression is required.)"
